The AP Biology
test ranks as the 5th most taken. In 2008, the
test was changed to "ensure that AP standards are
comparable to or higher than the grading standards that
are applied by college instructors." While the
fraction of students achieving a 5 on the test remained
consistent, all other scores dropped significantly, with
those effectively failing (a grade of 1), more than
doubled. The average score descended from over 3,
to 2.71

Students achieving a grade of four or
better on the AP Biology Test are eligible to earn college
credit in biology, usually allowing them to bypass the
typical introductory or 101 level college biology course. AP Biology covers Molecules and Cells
(25%), Heredity and Evolution (25%) and Organisms and
Populations (50%). Students are strongly encouraged to
complete both a high school level biology and chemistry
course, before attempting to learn the much more complex
material involved in AP Biology. It is highly
recommended that any study of AP Biology emphasize concepts
and processes over terminology and facts. 2
The test lasts three hours.
It
includes a 100 multiple-choice question section, of 80 minutes
in duration (60% of the score) and an essay section of 100
minutes in duration.
